Peteris Vasks’ music is often associated with his homeland Latvia and its struggle for independence and freedom. Of Silence, meaning the sweetness of tranquility is perhaps a mediation on hope.
The struggle and tension between a constant searching for beliefs, love and ideals in contrast to the harsh realities of conflict and despair are imbued throughout his music. This is the basic idea that has been the source of inspiration for the work.
This piece has been about trying to find a way to give that a physical language to illustrate and support the message of the music. At its core, it urges us to survive, to hope and to prevail
